In this month’s issue of the popular Crain’s automotive publication, there was a story written about the new Cadillac Escalade hitting the roads. It was written by Jennifer Brasky, and it starts out like any other Crain’s story. A new driver gets lost at a construction site, and he finds himself trapped in a dumpster. Fortunately, the driver is saved thanks to the GMAS 2 truck simulator used by the paramedics.
Jennifer describes her experience quite admiringly.
First off, she had a great time on the road and got to enjoy her first drive after winning her first driving competition. Then she got to do some testing in a closed section of the Grand Canyon. She says she absolutely loved the experience. With all the benefits of using an armored vehicle simulator, it makes sense that she would be a strong supporter of GMAT and GMC’s standardized training program for drivers of these kinds of trucks. That’s a good thing, because standardized training like that can help save a life someday.
As far as the story itself, it was a thrilling one. The problem is, there wasn’t enough humor to make it entertaining. In a previous article, I wrote about how standardized testing can lead to a lower score, even if the person taking the test didn’t really understand the material. If the standards for standardized crash tests are lowered, it doesn’t mean that someone will necessarily have to know what they’re doing to score better. This is why I called the March Mobile Truck Test Program ” armoured,” but that term does sound a bit like an attack on standardized education, even if it’s only a nickname.
The test, which was conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, didn’t really classify the test subject as being “armored.” It just said that the vehicle had been built to withstand impact in certain areas, which I think is technically true. It’s not like an tank, or a bulletproof vest, or even a flame thrower. So, I asked Will, and he said: “Well, you know what I meant. That was a misunderstanding.”
What I meant was that the NHTSA doesn’t classify crash testing as “armored vehicles.” And they have no plans to change that. What they want to do is make sure that every kind of crash the truck’s going to be used in meets all of the requirements of the safety rules that apply. That includes: penetration testing, impact resistance, crush protection, weathering, etc. I asked Will what he thought about having the app store available so that people could purchase practice versions of these armored vehicles.
He said; “It makes sense, of course, especially if your company is going to be the recipient of one of those grants.” Which he is certainly right, which makes better bulletproof cars in bhp crash team shirts.
